Our School

Upton Junior School was opened in 1971. Our pupils mainly come from the seaside town of Broadstairs, Kent.

We currently have 16 classes in 4 year groups. We have had several new build projects and in November 2005 all of our mobile classrooms were replaced.

Our extensive grounds host many and varied activities, including sports tournaments, Folk Week campers and fairs. We have an environmental area, with pond and also a 25 metre swimming pool. As a community school, we hire our facilities out to local groups.

We hold the FMSIS financial standard, Football Association Charter Mark, Quality in Study Support mark and Healthy School Status. As a healthy school we have our own catering facilities and staff. Our meals are excellent!

We are especially proud of our sporting and music traditions. Our sports teams have a reputation as 'the school to beat' in local tournaments as well as at County and even National level. We run many after-school sports clubs, with a focus on enjoyment as well as excellence, and host a huge number of Thanet schools sports events on our extensive fields. Due to our excellent facilities it is rare that we need to travel for fixtures and this allows us to involve as many pupils as possible in sports competitions.

Our designated music coordinator runs many music groups in the school and our choir have even toured abroad, singing in Paris at Euro Disney and a central Paris church. Every pupil learns to play at least one musical instrument during their time at Upton. We produce a show every year at a local theatre with the Year 6 pupils. Extra music tuition can also be provided from the Kent Music School tutors.

As a community school our facilities are hired out to local groups and we continue to build strong links with our neighbours. We were one of the first schools in Kent to have a Travel Plan approved. Information for this was gathered from pupils, parents and the local community.

The UPTFA support our school with fundraising events. These are popular and well attended.
